Mother of Pearl is an advancement of the concert performance Under Vand. The duo Barbara & Marie-Louise are transformed into oysters from an underwater world, moving around inside an installation made of 12 brass plates with different pitches. They are set into motion and function as a giant musical instrument. The piece is inspired by the creation of a pearl in an oyster. When a foreign matter enters the oyster shell, the oyster coats the material in a shiny substance and produces, the pearl.
Mother of Pearl draws the attention of the audience to what may seem alien. Investigating how the most precious can be created from disorder, as in the relationship between oyster and pearl, the unsolicited guest and the host. Barbara & Marie-Louise examine how the potential can be found in the stranger, and be fruitful and valuable as part of a system.
