DAUCUS TANACETUM REPENS are three site-specific sound sculptures. Each sculpture is activated by setting the suspended bell plates into vibration, gently striking them with a rubber mallet. When struck at the center, the tuned bell emphasizes its fundamental tone; when struck at the top, it emphasizes its overtones.
The sound sculptures are visual abstractions of the stigmas of three wild herbs – their inner reproductive organ. These herbs grow on the embankments surrounding AAU: Daucus carota (wild carrot), Tanacetum vulgare (tansy), and Ranunculus repens (creeping buttercup).
The piece mirrors the symbiotic relationship between the flowers of wild herbs and insects. The sound sculptures are “pollinated” when the bell plates are set into vibration. In a metaphorical sense, the students become the insects, gathering pollen and pollinating the flower.
Andersson explores in this piece a space for resonance between students and the sound sculptures. The piece invites new ways of being together with fellow students in a mutual interplay.
